An elderly couple has died in Greece and Belgium is fighting what appears to be its largest wildfire in recorded history, the latest events in a continent wide emergency fueled by relentless drought.

According to Guardian World, the couple was found outside their home in the Peristeria beach area of Salamis. Greece’s coastguard confirmed their deaths and reported that more than 500 people were ordered to evacuate the island.

Meanwhile, a blaze in Belgium's Hautes Fagnes nature reserve has burned more than 3,000 hectares since igniting on Friday, provisional figures show. The fire doubled in size within just 24 hours over the weekend, according to a separate report. While light rain early Monday helped stall its eastward march toward Germany, the fire continues to spread toward the northeast.

Belgium activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism on Saturday, drawing three helicopters and two water-bombing aircraft from Sweden, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic to assist the more than 250 firefighters deployed.

“This is no longer just a warning,” lamented Belgian newspaper Le Soir in an editorial about mounting climate related losses.

Hot, dry conditions are driving a multi country crisis. France is battling major fires in its southwestern Landes region that have scorched over 1,700 hectares since Thursday, requiring 550 firefighters, military personnel, and six water-bombing aircraft.

Emergency Evacuations as Belgian Blaze Straddles German Border

The Belgian wildfire’s location in a remote, peat rich nature reserve makes it particularly dangerous and difficult to fight. The extensive peatlands and pine forests have become tinder dry after a prolonged hot weather spell, creating a stubborn fuel source.

Authorities have been forced into a precautionary evacuation of parts of the town of Monschau on the German side as the blaze crept closer to the border. Inside Belgium, 600 people in Liege province were asked to leave their homes over the weekend, with a shelter established in a gymnasium in Malmedy.

Firefighters from neighbouring Germany and Luxembourg have joined the effort, alongside local farmers using their equipment. This cross border coordination underscores the fire’s scale and the shared risk as seen in our earlier coverage of Europe's Core Burns As Belgian Wildfire Threatens Germany.

The fire’s progression toward Germany shows how arbitrary national borders are to ecological disasters. It forces emergency services into a complex, unified command structure a logistical hurdle on top of the physical challenge of containing the flames in difficult terrain.

Beyond Belgium: A Continent in Flames

The crisis is not isolated. Across Europe, emergency crews are stretched thin.

In France, a separate fire in the northeastern Ardennes region has burned around 100 hectares. The deputy director of the Ardennes fire service, David Gouzou, called the situation "unprecedented in the recent history" of the region. These events follow a pattern of human caused ignition examined in Police Arrest Nearly 500 People for Starting French Wildfires.

In Greece, fire crews spent a second day battling an outbreak on the island of Skyros. The local mayor expressed confidence it would be extinguished within a day, offering a rare pocket of optimism.

In Croatia, authorities arrested four people on suspicion of starting wildfires along the coast that ripped through pine forests and olive groves.

In Spain, a wildfire in Huesca threatened a 1,000 year old monastery and has affected up to 16,600 hectares, hampered by windy conditions.

Analysis by XOOMAR: The geographic spread and near simultaneous intensity of these fires point to a systemic failure rather than a series of local accidents. Decades of land management practices, combined with a climate that now delivers hotter, drier summers with more frequent and severe heatwaves, have created a continent wide tinderbox. The repeated use of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism this summer reveals that national firefighting capacities are now routinely exceeded.

What Happens Next for Europe's Wildfires

The immediate question is weather. While light rain helped in Belgium, forecasters are watching patterns closely. Continued heat and wind could reignite contained perimeters and push active fires into new, populated areas, triggering further evacuations.

The long term question is adaptation. European nations are proving adept at crisis response, as shown by the rapid international deployment of aircraft. But they are failing at prevention and landscape management.

The next 48 hours are critical for containing Belgium's historic blaze and preventing similar outbreaks elsewhere. If containment fails in key regions, national and EU resources will be pushed to their absolute limit, forcing triage decisions no fire chief wants to make.

For Europe, this is the new baseline. The continent's summer crisis is no longer a historical anomaly. It is an annual event requiring a permanent, coordinated, and well funded continental defense.

Impact Analysis

  • The continent-wide scale and severity of these simultaneous blazes represent a direct and urgent threat to human life, property, and critical ecosystems.
  • Event activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism demonstrates the strain on national emergency services and the need for coordinated, supranational disaster response.
  • The reported fatalities, mass evacuations, and commentary framing this as "no longer just a warning" underscore the immediate, tangible human and financial cost of climate-driven extreme weather events.
