Shortly before 11am local time on Thursday, an 11-year-old boy drove his parents’ pickup truck into a Buddhist procession in north-eastern Thailand, killing at least nine monks and turning a pilgrimage into a mass-casualty crash.

The Mukdahan crash happened as monks in orange robes walked along a road in the town of Mukdahan, about 400 miles (650km) from Bangkok, according to Guardian World. Police have not filed charges, saying they are still trying to establish how the child came to be driving the vehicle and what happened before impact.

Boy, 11, drives parents' truck into Buddhist monk procession in Mukdahan

CCTV footage shared by a local rescue group showed the monks walking in procession before the truck struck them. The timestamp on the footage was shortly before 11am local time on Thursday.

The group was part of a pilgrimage from a temple in Mukdahan province to another in neighbouring Ubon Ratchathani, the provincial governor, Vorayan Bunarat, said. He said the procession included 34 Buddhist monks and five lay followers.

Images from the scene showed injured people on the road and monks’ possessions scattered across the crash site. Emergency workers responded as the death toll rose through the day.

Officials first reported that five monks died at the scene and three died in hospital. The Mukdahan provincial office later announced the death of a ninth monk. At least three others were critically injured.

That shifting count is why the toll is being reported as at least nine. Earlier reports from other outlets had cited eight dead before local authorities updated the figure.

Police said the boy took his parents’ pickup truck without permission and drove it for about 6 miles (10km) before losing control and crashing into the procession.

“We’ve been very strict on road safety in recent years. This case should be a lesson, not just for our province, but for the public in general when it comes to preventing road accidents,” Bunarat said.

The Mukdahan crash now sits at the intersection of grief, road safety and child responsibility. The facts released so far point to a catastrophic loss of control by a child driver, not to any stated motive.

Mukdahan crash shocks Buddhist community after procession turns deadly

The victims were not pedestrians in an ordinary street crossing. They were monks taking part in a religious procession, a detail that will deepen the shock in Thailand, where Buddhist monks are highly venerated and public processions are common.

More than 93% of Thailand’s population follows Buddhism, according to the source material. Monks are widely seen receiving alms from the public, and signage on public transport asks passengers to give seats to monks as well as elderly and pregnant passengers.

That cultural position matters. The Mukdahan crash struck a group whose public presence is familiar, visible and socially protected. The footage circulating from rescue workers is likely to intensify public attention because it shows the vulnerability of a procession moving along a road in daylight.

A monk identified as Phra Sompong described the moment in a video posted online by local rescue workers, according to related reports carried by AFP-linked coverage.

“I saw a boy driving a pick-up truck, approaching. At that moment I was chanting ‘Buddho, Buddho’ (a meditation mantra),” he said.

“Then suddenly the truck hit at full speed and crashed us.”

He said another monk and he managed to jump out of the way in time. “The first nine monks in line survived. But others who were hit were thrown into the air.”

XOOMAR analysis: The public reaction will likely turn on two linked facts already confirmed by police: the driver was 11, and the vehicle belonged to his parents. That makes this less a conventional traffic case than a chain-of-custody question around a dangerous vehicle.

Thai police investigate how an 11-year-old came to drive the truck

Police said charges have not yet been filed. The provincial police chief, Maj Gen Pairoj Thaiphutra, said investigators were still trying to establish the circumstances of the crash.

Officers had not been able to question the boy because he remained in shock and could not provide a statement, Pairoj said. Related reports said police had asked the child’s parents to come in so authorities could determine who was responsible for his care.

The immediate investigative questions are narrow but consequential:

  • Access: How did an 11-year-old obtain the pickup truck?
  • Supervision: Who was responsible for the child at the time?
  • Timeline: What happened during the roughly 6-mile (10km) drive before the crash?
  • Vehicle evidence: Police said the vehicle was being examined to determine the cause.

The case is legally sensitive because the driver is a child. Related AFP coverage published by The Straits Times said children under the age of 12 in Thailand have no criminal liability. That does not settle the question of responsibility, but it helps explain why police are focusing on the circumstances around care and vehicle access before moving forward.

Deadly transport accidents are common in Thailand, which the source material describes as having one of the world’s worst road safety records. Speeding, drink-driving and weak law enforcement are cited as contributing factors.

Bunarat framed the crash as a broader warning, especially for parents.

“I think everyone involved, especially parents, needs to help, because no one wants something like this to happen.”

The next decision point is procedural. Police need a statement from the boy, findings from the vehicle examination and clarity from the parents before any legal path becomes visible. Families and the public will be watching for confirmed identities, any further change in the death toll and whether authorities treat the Mukdahan crash as a road accident, a supervision failure, or both.

Impact Analysis

  • The crash turned a religious pilgrimage into a major mass-casualty incident.
  • Authorities are investigating how an 11-year-old was able to drive a pickup truck for about 6 miles.
  • The incident raises urgent questions about child access to vehicles and road safety enforcement.
