Trump-Endorsed Rep Cory Mills Ousted in Florida Primary

Share
Updated on August 19, 2026

In a decisive rejection of scandal, Florida Rep. Cory Mills lost his Republican primary on Tuesday to former TV anchor Ryan Elijah according to Time. The defeat came despite former President Donald Trump's personal endorsement, a powerful asset in GOP primaries that ultimately failed to shield the two-term congressman from a long list of controversies.

Elijah captured the nomination in Florida’s 7th District with 46% of the GOP primary vote to Mills's 34% with over 80% counted. The result marks an unambiguous upset. Polling ahead of the primary showed volatility, but the final margin suggests a clear, last-minute consolidation against the incumbent.

Kevin Wagner, a professor of political science at Florida Atlantic University, framed the outcome simply. "Whether [Mills] wants it to be or not, obviously the allegations against him have become the defining thing that people are talking about," he said.

The Weight of a Multi-Front Scandal Campaign

Mills's loss was not a surprise born of policy differences. It was the culmination of months where his campaign was overshadowed by investigations and allegations.

The Investigations: The House Ethics Committee is probing Mills for allegations of sexual misconduct and campaign finance violations. Separately, according to NBC News, a Justice Department investigation is looking into his personal and campaign finances. Mills has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

Specific Allegations: A court issued a restraining order against him last October after a former girlfriend accused Mills of threatening to release explicit videos of her. Separate reporting has questioned the veracity of his military service record and detailed past controversial behavior on a private overseas mission.

Financial and Political Isolation: The scandals choked his campaign coffers and drove away key allies. Mills raised a meager $59,000 in the second fundraising quarter of 2026, a fraction of what a typical incumbent collects. Fellow Florida Republicans, including Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Haridopolos, endorsed Elijah. Governor Ron DeSantis publicly stated he did not support Mills. This local abandonment proved critical, echoing other instances where national political shields have failed to protect embattled figures, as seen when Trump-appointed judges have been central to high-stakes legal battles.

“I have not endorsed Cory Mills and I do not support Cory Mills,” DeSantis told reporters last week.

Even Trump appeared to offer a last-minute, silent rebuke. Just days before the primary, he reposted endorsements for all Florida Republicans in Congress on Truth Social, but omitted Mills.

The Limits of National Clout in a Localized Meltdown

Trump’s “Complete and Total Endorsement,” issued in February, could not save Mills. This highlights a potent, if rare, political reality: in districts where a candidate's personal conduct becomes overwhelmingly toxic, even the most powerful national endorsement has its limits.

Professor Wagner interpreted the dynamic bluntly. "The president's endorsement is powerful," he said, "but it doesn't prevent voters from making a calculation on what they think of him individually in that seat."

Mills is now part of a small group of Trump-backed candidates who lost primary fights this cycle, alongside others like Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee. The outcome suggests that for all of Trump's influence over the GOP base, there remains a floor of local accountability tied directly to character and legal exposure.

Ryan Elijah Versus a Reshaped Florida Map

The race now pivots to the November general election, where Ryan Elijah will face Democratic nominee Bale Dalton, a military veteran endorsed by former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

While the 7th District is still Republican-leaning, its dynamics have shifted. The seat is no longer burdened with a scandal-weakened incumbent, which Democrats had hoped would make it competitive. However, Florida's newly redrawn congressional map, signed by DeSantis in May 2026 and designed to favor Republicans statewide, adds a new layer.

Aubrey Jewett, a political science professor at the University of Central Florida, noted that if Democrats managed to flip this seat with Dalton, "that might help not only the Florida congressional delegation pick up a Democratic seat, but of course, yeah, maybe at the national level, might offset some of these losses that they're expecting" elsewhere under the new map.

Elijah enters the general election as the favorite, but without the Trump-powered incumbency advantage. His victory signals that for Republican primary voters in Florida, a candidate's local reputation and perceived integrity can still outweigh the ultimate stamp of approval from Mar-a-Lago. The broader implications for how the GOP navigates internal scandals, however, remain under scrutiny across the party's ranks, a tension not unlike those playing out in other contentious political arenas, including contentious media battles with the current administration.

Impact Analysis

  • Shows that even a powerful Trump endorsement can be insufficient to overcome severe personal scandals in a Republican primary.
  • Highlights how multiple ethics and Justice Department investigations can financially and politically isolate an incumbent, crippling their campaign.
  • Suggests voters in the district prioritized character and legal standing over party loyalty, potentially signaling a shift in primary electorate behavior.
