The program lets associates train for jobs at a Walmart Vision Center or Sam’s Club Optical Center while earning a fully funded associate degree in optical science through Live Better U, according to PYMNTS. Walmart said the launch was announced Monday, June 29, in a company press release.

Walmart Associate to Optician Program Opens a New Route for Store and Club Workers

The Walmart Associate to Optician program targets employees who do not already work in the company’s vision care centers. That matters because the path is not just a tuition perk for existing optical staff. It is a bridge from broader retail work into a specialized health and wellness role inside Walmart’s own stores and clubs.

Participants can earn a fully funded associate degree in optical science through Walmart’s Live Better U education benefit. They also complete hands-on clinical training, giving the program both a classroom track and a practical training track.

Who gets the clearest benefit first? Associates who want a defined move into optical care without paying for the credential themselves.

Walmart said the program is available at no cost to associates. The company also said it saves participants the $20,000 in education costs they would face if they pursued certification outside the program.

Licensed opticians at Walmart and Sam’s Club vision care centers currently earn an average starting wage of about $33.75 per hour, according to the company release cited by PYMNTS.

“A great fact about our first Associate to Optician cohort is that it includes associates with tenure at Walmart ranging from one year to 30 years,” Donna Morris, executive vice president and chief people officer at Walmart, said in the release. “That reinforces our belief that learning is continuous, and it is always the right time to explore your next career interest.”

The role itself is more technical than standard retail work. A related Vision Monday report, citing Walmart executives, described opticians as helping customers with frame and lens combinations, custom lens measurements, frame repairs and contact lens orders.

That gives Walmart a practical reason to train internally. Vision care depends on consistent execution at the store level, and Walmart is trying to create a clearer path from existing associate roles into optical services.

Walmart Uses Education Benefits to Build Higher-Skill Healthcare Roles

The new optician track follows two other internal pathways: Associate to Driver and Associate to Technician. Walmart is not treating the optician program as a one-off benefit. It is adding another rung to a career ladder that already includes logistics and skilled trades.

Walmart pathway Target role Training or credential detail from source
Associate to Optician Licensed optician roles Fully funded associate degree in optical science plus hands-on clinical training
Associate to Driver Walmart driving jobs More than 1,000 associates have earned a CDL while remaining employed and paid during training
Associate to Technician Skilled trades roles Pathways into HVAC, refrigeration and electrical systems, with a new training site in Atlanta

Walmart said Associate to Technician is expanding with a new training site in Atlanta. The company also pointed to a new pay structure, including a 40% higher pay range for the general maintenance technician role in Walmart U.S. and Sam’s Club Real Estate Facility Services.

How does this change the labor math inside Walmart? It gives the company more ways to move associates into trained jobs it already needs to fill, while giving workers a reason to stay long enough to climb.

Associate to Driver was Walmart’s first pathway program. When Walmart expanded it in January 2023, the company said associates who completed the 12-week training course and earned their CDL had “a coveted Walmart driving job ready to step into.”

The Associate to Optician program applies that same internal mobility logic to health and wellness. The source does not say how many associates are in the first cohort, how many locations will participate or how long the optician pathway will take.

That missing detail matters. Enrollment numbers and completion rates will show whether the Walmart Associate to Optician program is a meaningful pipeline or a limited pilot with strong optics.

“When we invest in helping associates build skills, earn credentials and pursue new opportunities, we strengthen our business while creating pathways for people to build lasting careers,” Morris said in the Walmart release.

Walmart Vision Centers Become the Test Case for Training From Within

The clearest test will be inside Walmart Vision Centers and Sam’s Club Optical Centers. If associates complete the degree and clinical training, Walmart gets more trained optical workers. Customers could see the impact through staffing, service consistency and appointment availability, though the source does not provide current service levels or staffing gaps.

What should readers watch next? Three numbers: how many associates enroll, how many finish, and how many actually move into optician roles.

Walmart has already made earlier investments in optical training. Vision Monday reported that Walmart previously said it would invest in the careers, training and in some cases licensing for 4,000 opticians and 3,700 pharmacists. That earlier report also said Walmart expected the average wage for opticians to be more than $22.50 an hour after those investments.

The new program goes further because it reaches associates outside vision care. That widens the candidate pool beyond employees already working in optical departments.

This optician program sits in a different lane: workforce development tied directly to in-store health services.

The next signal will come from scale. If Walmart expands the Associate to Optician program across more locations, adds more healthcare credentials or reports strong placement into optical roles, the company will have evidence that Live Better U can do more than subsidize education. It can feed trained labor into parts of the business where credentials and hands-on skill matter.
