Understanding

Crypto Funding Rates

Why perpetual futures pay to stay in the trade

Perpetual futures have no expiry, so exchanges use a funding mechanism to keep the contract price anchored to spot. Every settlement period (usually 8 hours), one side pays the other: positive funding means longs pay shorts, a bullish-leaning market; negative means shorts pay longs. Persistently extreme funding marks crowded trades that historically precede squeezes, and gaps between Binance, Bybit and OKX expose cross-exchange arbitrage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often is this funding rate data updated?
Live rates refresh every 60 seconds from Binance, Bybit and OKX public market data. Settled funding payments are stored every 8 hours, and our history reaches back to September 2019 for major pairs.
What does a positive or negative funding rate mean?
A positive rate means long positions pay short positions, indicating bullish positioning pressure. A negative rate means shorts pay longs, indicating bearish pressure. Rates near zero suggest a balanced market.
Why do funding rates differ between exchanges?
Each exchange calculates funding from its own order book premium and interest rate component. Differences reflect where leveraged demand is concentrated, and large gaps can create funding arbitrage opportunities.
Is this data really free? Is there an API?
Yes. Every number on this page is available through our free JSON API with no API key, subject to fair-use rate limits. See the API documentation at xoomar.com/markets/api.
Can I use funding rates as a trading signal?
Funding rates measure positioning, not direction. Extremely positive funding often signals an overcrowded long trade and vice versa, but they are one input among many. Nothing on this page is financial advice.
