What this data is

Open interest

Open interest is the number of contracts that exist right now: every long has a matching short, and the count only changes when new positions open or old ones close. It's the cleanest measure of how much leverage sits in a market. Volume tells you how much traded; open interest tells you how much is still on the table.

Rising open interest with rising price means new longs are driving the move. Rising open interest with falling price means new shorts are. When price moves while open interest falls, positions are being closed, which is what a squeeze looks like from the inside.

Alongside the contract count, Binance publishes the share of accounts that are net long versus net short and the same split for its largest traders. Both are shown here per hour.

How to read it

  • Read open interest together with price. The four combinations (price up or down, open interest up or down) tell you whether a move is being built or unwound.
  • A sharp drop in open interest inside an hour is forced liquidation, not profit taking. Check the liquidation tape for the same hour.
  • The top-trader ratio and the all-account ratio disagree often. When they diverge, the large accounts are usually the ones to watch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is open interest in crypto futures?
The number of perpetual futures contracts currently open. Every long has a matching short, so the figure only changes when positions are opened or closed, which makes it a direct measure of leverage in the market.
Which exchanges are included?
Hourly history covers Binance USDT-margined perpetuals. The live figures on the funding page also include Bybit and OKX.
How often is open interest updated?
The hourly series is rolled up at five minutes past each hour. Live open interest on the funding page refreshes every 60 seconds.
What do the long/short and top-trader ratios mean?
The long/short ratio is the share of Binance accounts net long versus net short. The top-trader ratio is the same split for the largest accounts by position size. When they diverge, the large accounts usually lead.
Is this data free?
Yes. Every number on this page is available through the JSON API (30 requests a minute without a key, 120 a minute with a free account key) and as a CSV download.
