What the PCE price index measures

The personal consumption expenditures price index measures the prices of the goods and services people in the US buy. The Bureau of Economic Analysis publishes it in the Personal Income and Outlays report near the end of each month, at 8:30 a.m. ET. The Federal Reserve states its 2 percent inflation goal in terms of this index. The headline is the change on a year earlier; core PCE leaves out food and energy.
